Chuck started playing guitar at age 11 in his hometown of Bow, New Hampshire, with the
dream of becoming a rock guitarist. After quickly teaching himself to play and
learning his favorite songs, one year later, he began studying with local classical
guitar teacher James McGuire. He studied classical guitar, rock and jazz guitar,
and music theory with Mr. McGuire until 1997, when he enrolled at Lawrence
University in Appleton, Wi. on a performance scholarship. After deciding he wanted
to be closer to a big city with more performance opportunity, he transferred to
Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ and studied with guitarist Vic Juris. Since
then, he has moved to New York and made a name for himself appearing in such venues
as Blue Note, Smalls, and Smoke, performing with such musicians as Grant Stewart,
Joel Frahm, Mark Taylor, Tony Reedus, Vic Juris, and the late Dr. Arthur Davis, to
name a few. He also has written big-band charts, recorded his own compositions with
quartets, trios, and duos, and is currently involved in a recording project
featuring several of his solo guitar arrangements. In September ‘05, he was called
upon to compete as one of ten semifinalists in the prestigious International
Thelonious Monk Competition. He has also performed internationally, featured as a
headliner in the Yokohama Jazz Festival and playing in venues in Tokyo. Currently,
he lives in New York and performs as a freelance jazz musician.
